Home>SOUTHERN GRAMPIANS DELEGATION RETURNS FROM CHINA VISIT
| 4 November 2009 | | Southern Grampians Shire Council’s Sister Region Relationship with the City of Gaoyou, China has been cemented with the visit last week by Mayor Cr Marcus Rentsch and Chief Executive Officer Richard Perry.
The visit was in response to an invitation by Gaoyou Mayor Xia Zheng Xiang to attend the 5th National Postal Cultural Festival.
The City of Gaoyou has a long connection with the postal service. Out of more than 2000 towns and cities in China, Gaoyou is the only one named after its distinguished historical contribution to the national postal service for more than a thousand years and Gaoyou has been successful in hosting four National Postal Cultural Festivals since 1997.
Before attending the Festival Opening Ceremony the Southern Grampians delegation, which included former Mayor Howard Templeton, visited a number of major manufacturing businesses and various cultural heritage sites throughout the city and region. Amongst the businesses were manufacturers of: • Cotton spinning and textile; • Goose down clothing; • Lighting lamps and lamp poles; • Solar photovoltaic cells; • Electric wires and cables; • Electrode foil; • Photovoltaic storage batteries; • Circuit boards for keyboards.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Marcus Rentsch “These visits were very revealing in the extent of development and innovation occurring in the Gaoyou economy and the relevance of output in the world markets.”
Early in the visit, the delegation met with senior officials from the City of Gaoyou convened by Mr Chen Yang, Secretary of the City of Gaoyou Municipal Committee. Before an exchanging of gifts, Mr Chen proposed an exchange of expertise be developed between the two municipalities to assist in mutual economic and social development. The Southern Grampians delegation gave informal agreement to this proposal. | |
