STRUCTURE PLAN TO DRIVE DEVELOPMENT  Printer Friendly

16 October 2009
Southern Grampians Shire Council plans to develop a new strategy and framework to guide future development for Hamilton.

The Hamilton Structure Plan project will act as a prospectus for the town, give certainty to developers and drive a framework and urban design strategy that supports Council’s vision to become Australia’s most liveable provincial community.

The Plan will help to identify new business opportunities, review and revise how traffic moves through the town and build on the wonderful assets that already exist in Hamilton. It will also identify Hamilton’s residential land, its land supply needs and where development should occur.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Richard Perry said, “Hamilton is a town with enormous potential, including many wonderful public assets and a strong business sector.

“A Structure Plan is the tool used to prevent unplanned and uncoordinated development. It will provide the opportunity to plan and develop commercial precincts, residential areas and public open spaces that are attractive, pleasant and work efficiently for businesses, shoppers and recreational users.

“Consultants will be brought in to review the transport and parking needs, identify retail, industrial and commercial opportunities and develop urban design guidelines that bring functionality, interest and enjoyment into living and working in Hamilton.”

Council has committed significant resources to this project and is working with the State Government to attract further funding opportunities.

Council has also secured the support of Vic Roads to undertake an Origin and Destination survey of all truck movements through the town.

“The study undertaken by VicRoads will inform Council of where trucks are coming from, where they are going and whether they are stopping in Hamilton to deliver or purchase goods. It will provide vital information about economic activity generated as well as possible alternative routes for heavy vehicles.

“This is an exciting project that will drive development of the medium and long term in Hamilton,” concluded Mr Perry.

Tender documents for the Hamilton Structure Plan project can be obtained from Council’s website www.sthgrampians.vic.gov.au or by contacting Council’s Strategic Planner, Tom Scholfield on 5573 0256.
